Action Cartridge Update

A New Type of Cartridge: the Action Cartridge

Action cartridges are called that because compared to the other cartridges they are not passive – you can choose when to activate them by the press of a button. They are also more powerful than normal cartridges and you can only ever have one type of action cartridge, so choose wisely! There are three all new action cartridges and we’ve reworked two existing cartridges (throwing and saddle) into action cartridges. This makes throwing a bit more balanced and saddle a lot more competitive.

New Night and Rain Versions of the Soundtrack

The soundtrack now dynamically adapts when it rains or the night draws – for a much more atmospheric listening experience! The new tracks will also be added to the official soundtrack!

Record Breaker Crowns

We’ve added a little reward for those at the bleeding edge of Unrailed 2 competition: Record breaker crowns. If you inhabit a place at the top of the leaderboards you’ll get the golden crown hat, if you’re in the top 3 you get the silver crown and in the top 10 you get the bronze crown. An elegant way to distinguish yourself from the regular Unrailed crowd.

Balance Updates

In combination with the new action cartridges we also tweaked the balance of all cartridges and how and where cartridges appear in game. This should have little effect for players just starting out, but prevents high level players from hoarding huge amounts of cartridges too early. This means that we’ll have a new highscore-list, but the old highscores will also still be visible online.

Cartridges
– New: Introduced max cartridge counts for some cartridge when the effect doesn’t scale indefinitely
– New: A new cartridge slot “Action Cartridge” has been introduced. Players can only own one action cartridge type. Action cartridges use a button (eg [CTRL]/(Y)) to perform the action. Action cartridges are throwing, riding and a some new ones. Note that the cartridge overwrite can’t overwrite action cartridges.

– Change: Riding Cartridge is now an Action-Cartridge: To ride, you need to press the action-cartridge-button. Riding works only a limited time that is based on the amount of riding cartridges you have. While riding, you can do carry/mine/etc and you automatically get the milk buffs of the animal you’re riding
– New: A cartridge (history) selection menu when joining a game in which you missed opportunities to get cartridges. Can also be access via ESC->Cartridge History
– New: “Marathon: Higher probability for longer maps” cartridge added (not distributed at slot stations, similar to hard/easier maps)

Sound & Music
– New: 26 additional soundtrack versions added for night/rain/ebb. Each existing soundtrack will dynamically transition to another version at night, when it’s raining and during ebb/tide (on island interchange)

Highscore
– New: Ingame Crowns for any top 10 highscore entry (week, month, year or all time and can be any engine).
– New: You can see personal highscores online when clicking on a name
– Change: We split the highscores with the new version

Mapgen
– New: “Extra stock” shop/chest/vault/blacksmith modifier giving a greater selection (eg more cartridges, more chest items, more extensions) and level 2 wagon in shops
– Crash fix: Rare mapgen crash fix

UI
– New: Number of player lives will now be displayed above the player ui
– Improvement: Darker player UI color palette for more contrast
– Improvement: Player ring is rendered above most elements (similar to the outline) and uses only the lower half
– Improvement: Reduced memory allocations on UI rendering
– Improvement: You can switch the selected slot in the cartridge hub with Q/E
– Change: Player ring is now projected to the ground

Train & Wagons
– Improvement: Wagon extensions that have no stacked effect (eg. Pull from box extension, ghost, etc) can’t be stacked anymore and won’t appear stacked in shops
– Bug fix: The transformer wasn’t able to transform compressed commodities
– Bug fix: The train crashed multiple times when an extra life was left in the credits (now we reset them when entering them)
– Bug fix: It was possible to pick up wagons when transitioning to a blueprint area

Bot
– Improvement: The bot now immediately drops its last item if applicable (instead of carrying it close to the train which can take some time) when the new action has been pressed twice in a short time
– Improvement: Bot should not pick up from magnet wagon anymore
Improvement: Bot now only picks from supercharger, miner & collector when a resource is needed with high priority (eg crafter can’t craft or a specific other wagon is selected)
– Bug fix: Fixed multiple occasions where the bot would get stuck or repeat picking placing and the same spot
– Bug fix: Bot could not water anymore the train with throwing cartridge (regression)
– Bug fix: Bot doesn’t correctly detect the next iron to mine when tide is up

Balance
– Balance: More balanced cartridge sampling in vaults and boss rewards
– Balance: It’s now possible to build bridges with compressed wood. Bridges with compressed wood will automatically add bridges on neighboring tiles if possible.
– Balance: You can now milk animals from a carriage wagon
– Balance: Reduced start speed in each biome after monorail meadows (by one station)
– Balance: In endless, the countdown gets reduced about a second for each track when placing more than 10 tracks ahead of the train during the countdown
– Balance: Torpeboss has a more lava focus attack pattern if players are building far ahead
– Balance: Extra life cartridges are now rare, capped at 4 (before it was 10). After respawning once, you only 1 heart until the next station where you get all replenished
– Change: Players can drink out of the bucket only when carrying something
– Change: 13 wagons is the max for now. It’s actually the same as before but we make it explicit, to avoid wagons bugging around in the shop. We can think of increasing the limit if there is interest for it
– Balance: Animals attached to the milk wagon can’t be hit with the axe/pickaxe anymore
– Balance: Can’t mine animals on carriage wagon anymore
– Balance: Cartridge vaults now only appear on the hard-path on extreme maps. (Eg if you have a lot of nether cartridges s.t. you’d have multiple extreme maps to choose from, only one of them will have a cartridge vault). Also there won’t be 3 cartridge vaults in a row
– Balance: Shops with extreme difficulty now possible and they offer better equipped wagons
– Balance: Stacking has a slightly larger speed penalty
– Balance: Increased running cartridge cap to 17; they also compensate now exactly the carrying slowdown (eg 5 carrying and 5 running gives you normal speed when carrying 8 items)
– Balance: Reduced throwing per level increase to 1m
– Balance: Turret shoots a tiny bit slower than before when supercharged to the highest level; the water capacity is now related to its supercharged level and not its original level
– Change: In swamp you can now ride the frog instead of the spider & the spider can’t be carried anymore
– Balance: Frog has 9 health now instead of 1
– Balance: Brute force scales a bit slower up but from level 5 on, there is also a chance to hit diagonal neighbours
– Balance: Each overwrite at a Cartridge Overwriter station can now be used max 5 times per player
– Balance: Reduced max speed cap for the canyon boss
– Bug fix: Boss speed on 2nd visits were too slow

Platforms
– Improvement/Bug fix: Popup to explain how to handle possible controller issues on MacOS when starting the game

Editor
– New: Cartridge replacer modifier for editor (to simulate a cartridge replacer station)
– Bug fix: Sometimes no other players could spawn anymore on custom maps

Misc
– Improvement: Animals attached to the milk wagon can’t be squeezed anymore
– Improvement: Reduced controller analog stick input bias (it had been reported the walking in a straight line was difficult with the controller in some cases)
– Improvement: It’s possible to remap the cartridge-action button in the settings
– Improvement: When throwing a bucket and it was being emptied, it’ll visually fly back to the thrower
– Improvement: Performance improvements for the magnet-cartridge
– Improvement: Junk cartridge is now last in the displayed list
– Improvement: Lower max particles emitter cap on low and very low settings

– Bug fix: Can’t autopick tracks when the player is previewing a track to place
– Bug fix: It was possible to select boiler badlands in versus when first selecting the biome and then changing to versus (it’ll be activated again in a later patch when it’s playable)
– Bug fix: When pressing pick/place before going to an element that requires holding the pick/place button, the hold-timer was already running (e.g. cartridges or signpost). Now you can only start pressing once you’re highlighting the item.
– Bug fix: The ability to place tracks on teleporters has been disabled
– Bug fix: It was possible to place tracks inside shrines on a transition area
– Bug fix: Octoboss map spawned a bolt instead of a cassette
– Bug fix: Probably fixed a rare online de-sync issue
– Bug fix: “Scapegoat” was only triggered for the player that was targeted by a golem. Now all players should receive the achievement
– Crash fix: Possible startup crash fix related to Discord
